U.S. VETERAN Reaches Love FOR COSMETOLOGY DURING MILITARY SERVICE
Every hairstylist can recall the moment they became captivated by hair as well as the passion for creativity that it inspires. The tale was no different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her passion for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an experienced beauty education. In her own story, there is a valuable message that may be shared. “It doesn’t matter where you begin or the way you begin. I must manage to spark that passion into people where we’re creating this industry much better, we’re learning from our past and we’re continuing that legacy,” shared Kristyl. The following is her story.
First: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted in the age of 19. Her first duty station was in Okinawa, Japan, as well as a field operation in Korea. Weekly during Kristyl’s in time Korea, a barber would go to the site and give haircuts towards the Marines. However, this happened: “I was in a tent doing my own hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would certainly do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, while i had a Marine Sergeant move towards me and get me to get a haircut. I needed never cut anybody’s hair before but I jumped directly into it and the man finished up loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the following day, I had 13 Marines prearranged to me.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering as being a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut understanding that could it have been. Having a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair in the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and every time you service complaintant, there’s impact.
The outcome of the Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are at an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything needs to be flush, measured properly-there’s lots of care about detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was looking at Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the best people of this nation and we must be walking on as such. That’s where the impact produce and heart came from, and that i dreamed of being capable of transmit that through my hands to individuals around me…and keep these things walk around feeling proud and good from head to toe, and representing this nation as such.”
Similarities Operating: Military & Barbering
After returning from service, Kristyl asked herself what are the next challenge and chapter in their life could be. That’s when she thought we would pursue her education being a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge through her own background and looking forward, she found many similarities in their service and serving as a barber.
