Western Union and Kroger offer digital and retail money transfers
Western Union, the global cross-currency money transfer provider, has extended its 35-year relationship with Kroger, America’s largest grocery retailer, by setting up a money transfer partnership.
Through Western Union, consumers can send money digitally, or stage a transaction via Kroger’s Money Services online portal and pay in person.
In-person services available to Kroger customers include domestic and international money transfers, bill pay and money orders, available at more than 2,300 stores across the United States.
Union’s global network reaches more than 100 countries
Consumers can send money for pay out via Western Union’s global network of bank accounts and wallets in more than 100 countries, or at more than half a million locations across 200 countries and territories.
Within the U.S., funds may be paid into U.S. bank accounts or picked up from more than 54,000 Western Union locations coast to coast.
The Kroger Company, or simply Kroger, was founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is the United States’ largest supermarket by revenue ($121.16bn for fiscal year 2019), and the second-largest general retailer (behind Walmart).
Kroger is also the fifth-largest retailer in the world and the fourth largest American-owned private employer in the United States
Pay Bills
At a Kroger Money Services location, you can pay the following types of bills, among others:
Utility bills
Car payments
Cable TV bills
Phone bills
Rent
Child support payments
To pay bills at Kroger Money Services, bring your bill stub and the money to cover the costs of the bill and the fee for making the bill payment.
Cash Checks
Even if you don’t have a bank account, you can cash checks at Kroger Money Services. You can cash:
Payroll checks
Government checks, like Social Security checks
Income tax refund checks
Insurance settlement checks
Business checks
Child support checks
Cash PIN Debit Cards
To cash a check, you’ll need to bring the check, your Social Security number or taxpayer identification number and a valid ID. Acceptable IDs include a driver’s license or other state-issued ID, U.S. passport, military ID, resident alien ID, matricula consular ID, or tribal nation or reservation ID.
The cost to cash a check for up to $2,000 is $4 if you have a Kroger card and $4.50 if you don’t. If your check is for more than that amount, the cost is $7 with a Kroger card and $7.50 without one. Costs can vary by location.
Send Money
You can send money domestically or internationally at Money Services locations. You’ll need to bring the funds you want to send, either in cash or on a debit card; the recipient’s name, city, state and country; and your own government-issued ID. Fees vary depending on the amount being sent and the location it’s being sent to.
Purchase Money Orders
A money order is like a paper check, except that anyone can purchase one, even if you don’t have a checking account. Because you pay the amount of the money order at the time you purchase it, there’s no risk that it won’t be honored.
To purchase a money order, you will need your Social Security number or taxpayer identification number and a valid ID. Acceptable IDs include a driver’s license, state-issued ID, U.S. passport, resident alien ID, military ID, matricula consular ID, or tribal nation or reservation ID.
The fee for a money order can vary but is generally $1 if you have a Kroger card and $1.10 if you don’t. Money orders are typically limited to $1,000.
Purchase Prepaid Cards
You can also purchase prepaid cards at Kroger Money Services. A prepaid card is a debit card that is not associated with a bank account.
You purchase the card, and the user of the card can spend that amount by using the card as you would a debit or credit card — online, at the point of sale, or even by withdrawing money at an ATM.
Costs for prepaid cards vary. The activation fee ranges from $1.95 to $3.95. You can reload a prepaid card, and fees for this range up to $4.95. Some cards have a monthly fee of up to $9.95. ATM fees range from $0 to $3 per transaction.
Some cards pay cash back on eligible purchases you make with them. You can also get your paycheck or government benefits direct deposited to your prepaid card.
