Should you Pursue your Master’s Degree within the Military?

OPINION: I’m sure after reading the title most people who may have not served will assume it’s a no-brainer. I mean the military is investing in your education. Organizations like Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) have tens of thousands of lobbyers advocating for service males and females. Kind one decide to not earn their Master’s degree? Well…I will advise you now, neither I nor anyone else can answer that whenever you are looking for speaking to the mass.

The Soldiers are suffering from the opportunity to meet individuals coming from all areas of life. Being in air Force (that we guarantee it’s the identical for those branches), everyone’s story is different. Maybe you enlisted using your associates or bachelor’s degree already now you’re planning to strengthen knowing. Or you honestly should just check a box for professional development. In accordance with the Air Force Demographics, Air Force enlisted members only are the cause of 1.8% of master’s degree when compared to the 46.3% of the officers. This statistic emphasizes the varying education levels between those people who are enlisted vs officers.

BUT WHY NOT

Now, why would any serviceman or woman elect to not pursue traditional learning? Again these circumstances cannot speak for everyone, but just merely a snapshot of what I have experienced both personally via the eye area of my peers. Usually, the most challenging obstacle can be time, specifically duty diary for shift workers. Nearly all active duty members taking benefit of educational benefits will more than likely attend classes on the web due to an unpredictable schedule. Depending on your learning style this might become another barrier when compared with traditional learning environments. With time being unpredictable obstacles inevitably arise, for example creating a family, households where both mom and dad serve, single parents, etc. All circumstances vary, but there’s always challenges along this rocky road.

Twelve years into my service i had (Permanent Change of Station) PCS into my eighth assignment, excluding deployments. Each assignment provided its struggles; including times when I became scheduled for duty sunrise to sunset – or even the opposite. Another hurdle for Education members could be the uncertainty of constant inside their current career field post service. There are many career paths that take advantage of permission or certification instead of a graduate degree. Or maybe one joined the service to avoid a proper educational setting, but find themselves required to take part in traditional learning environments greater than expected.

Why you ought to

Just as I gave you logic behind why service members elect to not continue the amount (or at least put up a fight), you can find just like various reasons, if not more, why they should. Personal growth can be had through countless platforms but let’s be honest if it’s not documented with the right institute the validity of your degree or certification declines. There’s not just adding your company name to a certificate; it’s gaining the technical understanding your respective field. It’s another a few proving your dedication through the extra step, letting others know you are taking yourself seriously and so are maneuvering to the manager level.

Why wouldn’t anyone wish to expand their knowledge inside their dedicated field of preference? There is a very common assumption that you’re “in the field” experience lets you really see the ins and outs of the role. The expectation is that you have a great grasp about how things operate in their current field, college affords the chance to view a different side of the industry. Whatever field you’re in, people who have a degree in college begin to jump out and so are considered the expert. Let’s admit it, post-service jobs are not whatever they had been. Filter systems make use of education being a return on your investment – of yourself.

WHY DID I?

Like the most of service members I have faced the identical obstacles discussed. I have already been through eight assignments and various deployments including Pakistan and Iraq. Though it was difficult, it had been both a private choice and accomplishment I figured I could not achieve. My ambition came from looking to set the bar in my family, and prove to myself I could complete my Master’s degree from Liberty University while serving. Lastly, I wanted to cultivate professionally, expanding my knowledge and reaching an executive level during my potential industry.

Ultimately, while serving inside the military the ability to juggle both roles of student and Airman is vital. While serving being experienced with your work will always be the primary focus. Depending around the push from all the branches leadership will drive how rapid members move towards pursuing education while serving. When the world is in conflict school will take a backseat. Because of high operation tempos in select career fields, scheduling is a thing you must consider when opting to pursue an extended education. Like anything, the persistence for a graduate degree is ultimately your decision of the individual who desires to formulate their unique educational path.
