‘Here to help with all of your health and safety needs’
I am delighted to have joined the group at Acorn Safety Services at such an exciting time. Acorn has bold ambitions for the future, especially around its legionella bacteria services, and I can’t delay to be part of it.
I’ve invested many years working in the river industry, in domestic plumbing and remedials and more lately gaining valuable expertise carrying out legionella risk tests.
I’ve already been on the road meeting our clients face-to-face, as well as I’m really looking forward to establishing these important connections.
‘What is legionella bacteria as well as am I at risk?’
Legionella bacteria is microscopic and could be found in streams, waters, reservoirs and fish ponds, usually in suprisingly low numbers, where they don’t cause any issues. The difficulty comes when these tiny bacterias get trapped as part of your water system along with multiply, potentially ultimately causing Legionnaires’ Disease.
According to the Govt, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Ailment in the UK in 2019. It’s a critical illness which can be lethal – symptoms to be aware of include fever, headaches, cough and difficulty breathing.
While legionella bacteria may cause problems anywhere in the right conditions, a few areas such as spots where water can be stored or recirculated, in which the water temperature is between 20-45°C or where corrosion, sludge, scale as well as organic matters are present, are considered to be in much higher risk.
People who find themselves more susceptible to infection, including the elderly and the ones with weakened natural defenses, need to be especially cautious.
‘So, what can I do to shield myself and those about me?’
Employers, your self-employed, facilities managers, protection officers and property owners, are all among those who may have a duty to protect individuals against the risks linked to legionella bacteria.
The rules around legionella bacteria are really complex and testing must be carried out by an expert : this is where Acorn Safety Providers can really help.
