‘Here to help with all of your health along with safety needs’

I am happy to have joined the group at Acorn Safety Solutions at such an exciting time. Acorn has striking ambitions for the future, specially around its legionella germs services, and I can’t wait around to be part of it.

I’ve spent many years working in the water industry, in plumbing related and remedials and more lately gaining valuable expertise carrying out legionella risk tests.

I’ve already been on the road achieving our clients face-to-face, and also I’m really looking forward to building these important associations.
‘What is legionella bacteria and am I at risk?’

Legionella bacterias is microscopic and could be found in streams, rivers, reservoirs and fish ponds, usually in minimal numbers, where that they don’t cause any problems. The difficulty comes when these tiny germs get trapped within your water system along with multiply, potentially resulting in Legionnaires’ Disease.

According to the Federal government, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Illness in the UK in 2019. It’s a critical illness which can be fatal – symptoms to be familiar with include fever, headaches, cough and difficulty breathing.

While legionella bacteria can cause problems anywhere given the right conditions, a number of areas such as spots where water is actually stored or recirculated, in which the water temperature is between 20-45°C or where corrosion, sludge, scale and also organic matters exist, are considered to be in much higher risk.

Those people who are more susceptible to infection, including the elderly the ones with weakened immunity processes, need to be especially watchful.
‘So, what can I do to protect myself and those close to me?’

Employers, the self-employed, facilities managers, safety and health officers and property managers, are all among those that have a duty to protect people against the risks related to legionella bacteria.

The rules about legionella bacteria are really complex and testing needs to be carried out by an expert — this is where Acorn Safety Services can really help.
